I’ve been trying to figure out what was going on all week! This is horrible news! It seems like there are already plenty of regional Mexican music stations. Sad!

I was on a commercial for the last 8 days, and among my many duties was driving around the director, producers, DP, client, agency, etc. I can’t very do that in my little fit, so I drove a Ford Expedition around the whole week. (I felt guilty driving such a behemoth, and would repeatedly tell people it was a rental. I did get way better at parking it after the first few days though.)

Anyway, I start with this because it explains why I didn’t know 107.7 HITZ FM (Pop y Rock en español y mas) changed its format to 107.7 La Jefa (Regional Mexican) until a week after it happened.

Now I’m totally bummed. Yes, I realize Digital 92.5 still exists, but that’s Univision’s competition and now I won’t be indirectly paying my sister’s salary by listening to ads.

So, HITZ, I dedicate this song to you. Oh, and clearly the Marco Antonio Solis original is waaaaaay superior to this one, but I thought I’d keep it appropriate to the old format.

I listened to part of this on my way from Fred’s office to Office Depot. Tracy sounded great. I was annoyed by what seemed like Terri’s insistence on asking how Tracy felt as a child with a Vietnam veteran heroin addict father. And wondering if Tracy was scared when his father had night terrors from PTSD. Well of course he was! Maybe that’s a huge part of the book, I don’t know, but why bring it up if all you can say is “it must have been really scary to see your father scared like that.” No shit.

I did enjoy hearing this:

I got to Office Depot when Tracy started to cry about his mother. And then I nearly cried, and was glad I had to turn it off. But now reading the interview, I’m sorry I couldn’t hear the whole thing.

Roasted Tomato & Black Bean Soup.

Spicy Roasted Tomato & Black Bean Soup

1 lb tomatoes, cut in half or in wedges or thickly sliced
4 cloves garlic, cut in half
2 jalapeno peppers
2 T olive oil
a few springs of fresh thyme
a small handful of fresh basil leaves
salt & pepper
3 c vegetable broth
1 large stalk of celery, diced
1 small onion, diced
1 can of black beans, drained
salt & pepper & hot sauce to taste
1 lime

1. On a cookie sheet, lay out tomatoes, sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic and fresh herbs. Drizzle with olive oil and bake for about 1 hour at 350 degrees until tomatoes are soft and caramelized.

2. Add roasted tomatoes and their juices into a large pot, along with the diced onions and celery and sautee over med-high heat for a few minutes. Add in the stock and bring to a boil. Simmer, covered for about 30 minutes.

3. Use an immersion blender to quickly blend up about half the soup. I like it half chunky and half smooth, but blend (or not) to your own preference. Add in black beans and simmer away for another 15 minutes. Taste and add salt, pepper and hot sauce if needed. Squeeze in the juice of half a lime and use the remaining lime to squeeze into individual bowls. Serve with sour cream and tortilla chips.

So, I had the pleasure of being third row to these motherfuckers dancing last night during our Homecoming pep rally, Gator Growl. Suffice it to say it was fucking awesome.

Also: Dana Carvey was pretttttty good, O.A.R. was very average (more Dave Matthewsish than I expected), Danny fucking Wuerffel did a rendition of Dana Carvey’s “Chopping Broccoli,” and there was a wealth of “Let the Gator Growl” videos from celebrities, including Cash Cab’s Ben Bailey (!!!), Zach Braff (ugh), Guy Harvey, Demetri Martin, and even Richard Fucking Lewis.

Not bad, you guys. NOW FOR SOME FUCKING FOOTBALL!

Man, besides my freshman year (Bill Cosby!), Gator Growl was always so lame. So lame that I couldn’t even remember who played it. I just looked it up on Wikipedia and…..Christopher Titus in 2003? Come on! And now they get Dana Carvey?? He’s one of my favorites. I did get to see him (and take a picture with him) in West Palm a couple of years ago, which was great. I’m sure he was hilarious as ever last night. Anyways, time for some football. Go Gators!
