Can Dogs Catch Yawns from Humans?

This story starts with a 2008 paper in Biology Letters titled rather wonderfully, “Dogs catch human yawns.” Well, actually it started when my cat yawned and then I yawned and I wondered if animals could pass a yawn to me like a fellow human could. Spoiler: there’s no evidence that cats can cause you to yawn. My alternative yawn hypothesis for yesterday’s false yawn contagion is that sIeeping five hours a night causes me to yawn frequently and being a kitten causes my kitten to yawn frequently. Therefore, it is not surprising that we yawned in quick succession.

But anyway, back to the paper. Its authors, Ramiro Joly-Mascheroni, Atsushi Senju and Alex Shepherd were familiar with the literature about contagious yawning. And yes, there is a surprisingly rich literature about the phenomenon where one person yawning causes another person to do the same. Some conjecture that this is an empathic response because there is a relationship between “the susceptibility to contagious yawning and self-reported scores of empathy” and also because individuals on the autism spectrum do not catch yawns from other people.

But humans don’t seem to be the only animals that feed off the emotions of others. Dogs, some argue, might feel something like empathy. So, if empathy causes contagious yawning and dogsappear to feel empathy for humans, then perhaps dogs can catch our yawns.

Editor’s note: If I owned this yawning dog, I’d name him Charles Barkley.

Dog yawns are the cutest.

Nightly routine

Well, this peacefulness lasted about five minutes. Then another dog arrived and promptly attacked Colbie. She’s never aggressive towards other dogs, and usually when there’s a tussle at the park, she stays on the fringe instead of getting riled up by it like some other dogs do. But she fought back against this one and ended up with a pretty bad cut on her neck. The other dog (and its owner) left after that happened, and Colbie is tough, so she didn’t seem fazed by it. I let her run around and play for a little while longer until another little dog got there and tried to hump her for 20 minutes nonstop. Now we’re home and she seems ok, but worn out. Poor Colbster. And poor me - being a (dog) parent is stressful!

Kelsey is taking care of Elliot while our parents are in Australia. He seems to be enjoying Gainesville.

This might look like the sweetest face ever, but it’s really a demon in disguise. I’m trying to cure Colbie of her separation anxiety, so I’ve been letting her roam the apartment instead of putting her in her crate for a few hours at a time. It’s frustrating because even if I walk out the door to check the mail or go to the laundry room, she starts whining and scratching at the door.

But then when I’m home for a while sometimes she acts like she needs her alone time and will move from the living room to the bedroom for no reason at all. I don’t understand her!

Today I went home at lunch to let her out like I normally do, and it looked like a pillow bomb had gone off in my living room. Colbie was sitting on the couch looking all innocent and cute. She is so crazy, but I lover her to death.
